archibald strohalm las ik toen ik 22 was en vond ik een prachtig boek. nu ik 46 ben, las ik het opnieuw en vond ik het niet veel. natuurlijk het boek staat vol inventieve passages, maar als roman stelt het me teleur. het lijkt een samenraapsel van hersenspinsels en een ideeëngolf, een inspiratiebron voor de filosofen, psychiaters en dichters onder ons. ik lees het gewoon over ruim twintig jaar nog eens. wie weet hoe ik er dan over denk. zo zie je maar dat je oordeel heel sterk van je referentiekader afhangt. in het uittreksel op de uittrekselbank van de bieb wordt het een experimentele roman genoemd en dat is het zeker. het is een gelaagd boek dat chaotisch leest. het belang dat strohalm in het boek hecht aan de weg van het lachen, tegenover de doemprediking van de poppenspeler, deed mij sterk denken aan umberto eco's de naam van de roos, waarin het geschrift over de lach (het tweede deel van de poetica van aristoteles) wordt gezocht, begeerd en gehaat in een abdij die geteisterd
